It was nearly noon. Taylor was gazing out the kitchen window as she sipped the last of her chamomile tea. The sun was high and bright in a vivid blue sky, the day pleasantly warm and breezy for the first week of October. Not the kind of day one would have expected hell to freeze over, she thought to herself with a wry little smile.

But then she supposed almost anything was possible when one was dealing with Adam McCord. She was going camping, wasn’t she?

She glanced at the soft-sided bag sitting in the hallway and mentally ran down the list of items she had packed according to Adam’s instructions. There were two pairs of jeans, a comfortable size eight this time, two warm pullover sweaters, several pairs of thick cotton socks, an all-purpose windbreaker, a pair of gloves, several changes of underwear, a towel and washcloth, and sundry personal items.

Considering the almost summery weather Knoxville was having, she would have assumed all this warm clothing was unnecessary. But Adam had assured her that in the mountain altitudes temperatures ranged from fifteen to twenty degrees cooler than those in the valley areas. Apparently, the Great Smoky Mountains were known for their clear days and cool nights at this time of the year.

Fastidious to the end, Taylor rinsed out her teacup and set it in the drain rack to one side of the stainless steel sink. The borrowed picnic cooler sitting on the counter was filled to the brim with the food she had insisted on bringing as her fair share for the weekend. Although the subject of money had never been discussed between them, she was quite sure that she had more to spare than Adam. And it wasn’t cast in stone anywhere she knew of that only the man could spend his money on dates.

Not that this was exactly her idea of a date. In fact, she still wasn’t sure just when or even why she had agreed to go along with this crazy scheme of his. Adam’s campaign had been both strategic and subtle from beginning to end. He had assumed that sooner or later she would break down and agree to go.

He had mentioned at every opportunity the breathtaking pageantry of color in the mountains in the autumn, the seemingly endless array of yellows, reds, browns and purples. He had hailed the majestic peaks softened by a forest mantle, stretching away to remote horizons, the smokelike mist that rose from the dense plant life. He had extolled the hundreds of miles of trails that wound along crystal-clear streams and waterfalls, past dense forests to bright vistas that unexpectedly opened on mile after mile of rolling mountain slopes.

He had even thrown in a few references to the two hundred lands of birds that had been observed in the Great Smokies and the numerous varieties of wildlife from the black bear to the white-tailed deer to the rare, but occasional, bobcat that might appear on or near the road.

Well, perhaps Adam hadn’t been so subtle after all, maybe only relentless.
